Disability Bowls

DISABILITY STATEMENT

Prince Arthur Road Indoor Bowling Club is inclusive and has facilities and coaches to encompass persons with disabilities and enable them to partake in the sport of indoor bowling, Boccia or the social aspect of the club.

Recently Prince Arthur has received an award from Medway Council for its work towards inclusiveness.

Award Name _ Outstanding Contribution towards Physical Health

The winner of this year’s award is Prince Arthur Road Indoor Bowls Club. The club has over 350 members, both playing and social, providing an excellent opportunity for locals to stay fit, both physically and mentally.

The club is totally inclusive and its members are from a wide range of ages and are inclusive going that extra mile for people with disabilities, physical or learning needs and hosts two disability groups who meet regularly to play the Paralympic sport of Boccia and Rochester Blind bowlers’ group.”

DISABLED BOWLERS are able and encouraged to join all types of matches at the club, with or without using the club’s specialist equipment ranging from bowls wheelchairs, bowls launchers, step-ups, handrails and wheelchair ramps.

Some of our coaches have attended specialist Bowls England Disability Bowls courses and will be available to coach new bowlers, who identify as having a disability and will arrange for specialist equipment to be available as required.

It is requested that persons with disability needs first contact the club and arrange to come to the club and meet our disability advisor who will show them around and explore the ability and requirements for the new bowler.

The club is sited across from the Royal Engineers Museum and the number 116 bus service stops outside the club, the 101 runs by the top road about 300 meters from the club.

DISABLED parking is marked and sited adjacent to the club entrance and the parking area has a barrier that will automatically lift when vehicles approach.

ACCESS into and throughout the club is on a flat level including all facilities such as restaurant, bar, seating area and disabled washroom.

BOCCIA is played on Saturday morning throughout the year. It is a para-Olympic sport, similar to Boules. It is played seated in teams and open to all with and without mobility or disability impairments.

BLIND BOWLERS Rochester blind bowlers play on a Tuesday at the club. All are welcome. Some members play for Kent in inter-county competitions. Please ask for details and pamphlet at the front desk.

Parking

Prince Arthur has a large car park with disabled parking bays near the main entrance.  The barrier will lift when a car approaches and a member’s card is needed to exit the car park.


Nearest public transport links

For those members using public transport there are bus stops for the 116 bus just outside the Club in Prince Arthur Road, and there are bus stops, just a short walk up the road from the Club and opposite the King Charles Hotel in Brompton Road, giving access to the Medway Towns and beyond.



Flat access or ramps available

Access to the Club is through double opening doors with the main social area being on one level.  Access to the bowling green is via a ramp or steps and for those using a wheelchair an extra ramp can be put in place to get down to the green itself.

Hand rails and disabled toilet

There are hand rails down each access to the rinks and there is a hand rail between rinks for  members to get down to the green.  There is a disabled toilet on the main social area.


Designated sessions or coaching sessions available

We offer Coaching sessions led by qualified Coaches.  We encourage all new members to join in the Organised Roll Ups where existing members will always give assistance and encouragement to newer bowlers.

If you want coaching then please contact the club who will advise of any sessions currently available or contact the coaches to arrange new sessions as needed.


Equipment available (bowling arms/wheelchair/bowls etc..)

We have 3 wheelchairs designated for use on the green and a full range of different size and weight bowls available for hire for a small donation
