AND NOW A FEW WORDS FROM OUR SPONSOR

With rumours of overspending on facilities and the rush to get them ready, (new carpet and coffee machine), backhanders to local contractors, (Dave Hood, Vic Ashby), allegations of drug taking and doping, (fish cakes) and with people not attending due to the Zika Virus, (although Dave Hood thought this was the Tikka Virus and he said he was having nothing to do with anything involving a curry!), the great sporting event of the summer was beset with problems.  No, no, not the Olympics but the PARIBC summer comps.  The unlucky for some, date of Sat 13/08/16, saw the finals day take place, in the deserted and cavernous arena of the PARIBC Bowl – O – Drome.

In the singles final Babs Tomlin defeated Graham Hubbard 19 shots to 12 shots, whilst in the drawn mixed pairs final, Dot Elliott and Babs Tomlin beat Malcolm Clark and Deidre Williams by 20 shots to 12 shots and in the drawn mixed triples final, Dot Elliott, Patrick O’Meara and Dave Risbridger got the better of Dave Elliott, Graham Hubbard and Glynis Whatman by 28 shots to 10 shots.

There were certainly some wise, old heads, (oi, oi, less of the wise!), okay, some old heads, out on the green today and you can see from the results that it was a good day for two of the ladies, Dot Elliott and Babs Tomlin, who both struck gold, 2 times over.  It was also good to see two relatively new bowlers to the club, (one more coiffured than Team GB Olympic gymnast Louis Smith, the other with hair shorter than one of Olympic swimming presenter Helen Skelton’s dresses!), namely Graham Hubbard and Dave Risbridger, enjoying themselves and both performing very well in the finals.  So well done to them.  The only disappointment of the day was the complete lack of members who came down to the club to support the day, with the number of those who did turn up being able to be counted on the fingers of one hand, so that shows how many were there.  I know we all have lives outside of the bowls club, (except me, who has no life and no friends!), but it would have been nice to see more people pop in, even for say, 15 – 20 mins, just to support the finalists and the day.  But hey ho, such is life!

Thanks on the day to President Jim Masters, (who would have been in the pairs final himself, if he’d not been let down by his partner, the worst bowler in the club, during an earlier semi final match!), for marking the singles final, to Dot Elliott for doing a tasty spread for all competitors and to Babs Tomlin for doing the bar.  And to those hardy few who turned up to support and watch events unfold on the green.  Your support was very much appreciated.  However the main thanks go to Barry Tomlin, for organizing the whole of the PARIBC Summer comps.  He picked up the organization of it all late in the day when it looked as if it wouldn’t take place and ensured that a programme was put in place.  Thus a massive pat for on the back to him for all his hard work and efforts.  He already has plans for next summer, but I think these involve a pool side bar and plenty of alcohol………………but who knows, running a summer 2017 bowls comp. might just figure on his agenda.  Watch this space!  Well done Bazza!

I’m now off for a days bowls at the seaside on Wed, to have sand kicked in my face on the beach and sit in the rain on the prom, eating soggy fish and chips!  Happy days!

Kind regards, your correspondent, on standby to act as pole, in case any of those used in the Olympic pole vault competition snaps or breaks!

IN CASE YOU HAVEN’T GUESSED NONE OTHER THAN THE THIN MAN HIMSELF
