After much hard work, effort, planning and prep, by the good lady herself, Soozie Moreton’s Rinkathon / Walkathon, to raise money for the Club, took place on Sun 20/09/26 at the Club. A hearty band of volunteers, put their best foot, (or in Irene Ashby’s case, her NHS crutch!), forward and could be seen completing many a lap of the PARIBC green, as a suitably put together soundtrack was played across the sound system. All had been sponsored to complete various distances and were keen not to let anybody down. After a quick warm up and formation lap, the starting grid was assembled and off they went, cheered on by the spectators and support crews. Obviously, initial choice of footwear would be vital, as the walkers were keen to avoid too many pit – stops and those who chose all weather for their feet, seemed to be coping better than those on slicks. Fuel supply and on take provision stations were set up, at every other corner to ensure the walkers were suitably fed and watered and there were quiz questions on the walls, to test the walker’s mental capability as well. All seemed to be going well, but then as The Proclaimers song – “I would walk 500 miles” boomed out, the walk was yellow flagged and the safety car had to be deployed. Unfortunately, Maureen Osborne had taken a tumble on one of the corners and promptly went over, or as they say in the track world, “she went A over T”! Luckily, just a bruised knee and bump to the nose, but it meant her race was run after less than one lap. Once all had been cleared, the walk continued on its merry way and all completed their required laps and then stayed out there for more.
All joking aside, a considerable amount of money, (they are still counting it all), was raised for the Club coffers and the total figure is looking to be well over 4 figures, so what a result that is. Many thanks to all those who took part and also to all those who sponsored, donated and dug deep into their pockets for this day, it is very much appreciated. Thanks also to all those who helped on the day, (including those on kitchen duties all day), but biggest thanks goes to Soozie Moreton, the one woman whirling dervish, (when she has an idea in her head), for taking this idea from conception to completion and all the hard work in between to get the event done…ably backed up by hubby Chris! Thanks Mr and Mrs M. from all at the Club, enjoy your week off…on your walking holiday!
