Dave Hood Memorial Day / Summer Trophy – Sat 19/07/25

On Sat 19/07/25, the Prince Arthur retirement and rest home, played host to the memorial day for Dave Hood and for the Summer Trophy to be played for. A great turnout of 51 players and 7 guests, all seemed to enjoy the afternoon, judging by the amount of noise and banter that was heard, even if they hadn’t a clue what they were supposed to be doing, or what was actually going on! 8 home and 8 away teams, (a mix of 13 x triples and 3 x rinks), battled it out, across 4 sessions of different formats of bowls, to give us a top home and a top away team, to contest the final. In which, the home triple of Christine Heward, Doug Whiteoak and Dave Sutherland, beat the away rink of Sue Smith, Alan Cross, Marc Carr and Patricia Wells and so were duly crowned this year’s summer champs, so well done to Christine, Doug and Dave. Huge thanks are due to Marc Carr, Sue Smith and Guinness Whatman for all their help before and on the day, to Madge Slipper and Vaughan Jones for their sterling efforts in the kitchen, for the fine tea, very much appreciated by all. Also thanks to Soozie Moreton who covered the bar at the end, when Janet Small, who was helping out, couldn’t quite reach the beer pump taps, let alone get anywhere near the optics, even though she was wearing those high heels! But most thanks go to all those who attended, because it makes no odds how much planning, (or lack of, as per today?!), goes into the day, if no one turns up then we have no event. And with it happening, then the important bit is that it is money going into the Club coffers. Also really nice to see a few of the new members and new bowlers, getting involved today. Thanks to Sue Smith who took the pics of the day and who also kindly posted some bits on the various social media outlets and this saw a nice reply from Dave Hood’s family, thus making all that effort you all put in today, very worthwhile, so ta very muchly! Although if Dave was looking down from above, I doubt he would have been interested in the bowls, his focus would have been more on the sausage rolls and coffee & walnut cake that we had for our tea!
