Vic Ashby Memorial Match 2024 – Sunday 3rd November

The usual 7 months of planning goes out the window when we have 3 drops outs on the day, that we are waiting for and that nobody knows about, or why they haven’t told anybody that they are not coming in?  So with a bit of shuffling around, we just about ended up with 8 rinks of mixed triples and then the confusion began and that was just with the usual, normal bowling, before we even moved away from the norm, into the world of behind the jack to score bowls, not your own woods bowls, 2 jacks bowls and one wood, all count, bowls.  The interpretation of the rules seemed to vary across all 8 rinks, which meant that scoring of each end, on each rink, could be at best, described as loose!!!  Come the end of 18 ends, the dazed masses of the PARIBC ranks were looking for a sit down, in a darkened room and a stiff drink!  The fact there were nearly 20 wrong biases bowled on the day, didn’t show peoples bowling skills off in a good light, but it did mean that the shrapnel pot benefitted greatly, as all the fines were paid into this!  The winning triple were Glynis Whatman, Soozie Moreton and John Lake and their names will be added to the previous winners, (of this day), plaques, that adorn “Vic’s bench”, at the far end of the Club, so well done to them.  They had a winning advantage of just two shots over the triple of Jean Lacey, Colin Capeling and Marc Carr, with the third placed team, a further shot back.  But the scores don’t really matter, (just as well!), as all seemed to hopefully enjoy themselves, on a day when Vic was remembered and in her post match speech, Irene Ashby, made this very clear, as she thanked all those who had turned out to support the event and make the day special.  She also kindly presented the winning triple with bottles of wine a plenty and there was even one for the organiser of today’s “mess”, which was very much undeserved, but very much appreciated and one which he knocked back on the 20 mins walk home.  The post – match raffle, saw the fresh fruit get left to last, to be taken, although well done to Colin Capeling on managing to win the prunes.  We do our best to show we are a caring club and like to keep our regulars, regular!  Thanks to the 4 visitors for their support and huge thanks to Gemma and girls in kitchen for the lovely meal, to the Green triplets, (Jo, Joanna and Joanne), for bar duties and jovial repartee with members and visitors alike and to Glynis Whatman for locking up.  So same time again then ladies and gents, in 12 months?  See you there!
